Born in Montevideo in 1964, Alvaro Arrosamena lives and works in Sweden and Uruguay.

Arrosamena´s concept address to political, social and environmental.

Dividing his time between Sweden and Uruguay, he has constructed a diverse body of work that exploits as many types of media constantly interacting with one another. Paintings, installations, performances, film and multimedia are the tools he uses to express his own vision of the world, where different aspects of popular cultures, traditions and transgressions are common. He integrates spiritual and socio-political subjects to analyze the problems of identity, social integration, acceptance and assimilation in today's multi-racial western society. Influences and taboos related to mass culture, the subversive, the minorities, subcultures, forbidden spirituality and the occult.

Arrosamena's work typifies the complexity of our age, when certainty seems more elusive than ever. In his paintings and performances, it is difficult to determine whether east is west, up is down, left is right, or good is evil.  As he defined his own work, “every human manifestation absorbs cultural references, there is no god out there, and people create them adapting cultural references”

Abstract from ArtResearch magazine nov 2009

His work in "rituals" defines a place that our culture calls irrational and subjective and present us with works of art that analyze the otherness, the occult  or even the questioning of gender values or cultural taboos in western society.  In these activities the audience form part of the installation and experience a variety of feelings and emotions  during the session. This includes music, dance and ritualistic expressions  where female and male performers often head some kind of participatory animistic ceremonies.

Performing a live piece of art attempts to introduce sensible communication in determinate space and time, which only exists through the influence and participation of the spectators through modifying and interacting with the artwork. The individuals become the only point of reference and therefore the relationship between the spectator and performer becomes the subject of the work

Performace, politics and the media

Performance is perhaps the discipline through which we can approach a more intimate dimension of Alvaro Arrosamena's work. A complex combination of projects that interacts between different disciplines to create what he calls "communication experiences

His work is primarily conceptual multiplemedia using action, installation and performance. Alvaro shows interest in the metaphysical and this influence his choice of materials, conception and form of expression.

Alvaro´s live artworks tends to connect unusual objects with transformed spaces. Movement and action find their way into performance works, is why concepts that drive his works can take variable forms. He tends to go for an interactive process that spins the conceptual with the aesthetic.

The implications of the interplay between body and space in their different manifestations, give rise to the production of these "communication processes" where Arrosamena arrives to transmit a kind of sacred occult message and makes us partake of legendary expressions with spiritual and human contexts. > Read more

Expresion and  culture

Performance and ritual

Performance is a work of art that can´t be sold or bough in any market, this discipline offers the tools to make artwork even more independent of the expectations or interests of  the establishment and the power of money.

In this case the artist concentrates on what he wishes to communicate without any compromise that might bias his work. Far from being able to be passively consumed, drama on stage demands an active participation from its audience.

dreams

"I believe that creativity is essentially interdisciplinary – the unpredicted connections, leaps, oppositions of creative responses do not respect the borderlines of disciplines. This is how new thought emerges. Art processes are useful training for creativity, bringing more experiences and possibilities to explore but do not have an exclusive hold on creativity.

Interdisciplinary practice is fundamentally about moving out of spaces of operation, materialization of the idea and the development of the creative process involving the combination and interaction of different disciplines. The work exits outside material reality but is not purely conceptual, many more factors than the concept are of critical importance in this is interdisciplinary space."
